“The book—TRICKED—is written from the perspective of an African American woman who is neither stereotypically angry nor a product of poverty. Minor uses first person narratives to weave a thrillingly suspenseful story about a brilliant mathematician, educated at Florida A & M, the Wharton School and Penn Law, who discovers loopholes in the way securities are traded. She formulates an idea, where those trades can be used against us all. While her discoveries provoke her to close the holes, a series of life shattering secrets held together by self interested conspirators, she calls family, friends and mentor begins to emerge. She becomes hounded for what she knows and hunted for who she is.

“The book is available on Barnes&Noble.com, Borders.com, Amazon.com and on our website at www.RoseapplePublishing.com.

“Minor has book signings scheduled in Chicago, Milwaukee, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Washington DC, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Raleigh, Dallas & Houston.
About the Author: “I was born to write,” she told friends in Gary, Indiana, the youngest child of a steel worker and school teacher. Cynthia A. Minor dreamed of becoming an author at a very young age. An observer by nature, she read everything she could, including the dictionary and telephone books. Smart by all accounts, she was often sent to the library for talking in class. Unbeknownst to most teachers, it wasn’t the punishment they intended. Instead, it was a joyous and perhaps calculated experience. She was surrounded by her favorite things. Books. Her high school librarian noticed her fondness for Keats, Browning, Dumas; the literary greats and encouraged her appetite for the illustrative works while challenging her to read literature of all types and always under the threat of being tossed out. “You can never know too much, unless you already know everything,” Ms. Anna Conner explained. “These literary giants are no smarter than you. I believe you can write a book that I’ll be proud of one day, if you would just stop talking and write!” This challenge lived for many years before she wrote her debut novel “TRICKED.”

Born in Rapid city, South Dakota in 1965, David was brought to Washington, D.C. by his parents at the early age of two. He began his education in D.C. public schools, later moving to the metropolitan Washington area and attending Maryland public schools. During this period, David played the baritone (euphonium) in school and in the county orchestra earning superior ratings on his instrument.

After hearing recordings of Larry Graham and Louis Johnson, The desire to switch to electric bass was overwhelming. At age 12, David’s parents presented him with a beginner’s bass guitar. Excelling rapidly, he eventually achieved the “outstanding band member” award during his high school senior year. After witnessing David’s participation in school, church, local top 40, R&B, funk, and go-go bands (along with numerous studio sessions with local gospel artists), his parents were convinced that his talent was worth nurturing and were supportive to David’s matriculation at Berklee College of Music, where more growth ensued.

Exposed to various idioms [musical], David was able to absorb an array of musical flavors as well as perform in diverse musical situations. Upon graduation, David locked in the position of bassist with Polygram recording artist Walter Beasley. In January, 1989, he was called to audition for Maurice Starr (Producer of New Kids on the Block) and landed the gig. Eventually earning the position of musical director, David helped to take their live show to an unprecedented pinnacle.

In February 1992, he moved on to tour and/or record with a vast selection of artists such as world renown jazz saxophonist, Chico Freeman, the R&B fame of songwriter/singer/bassist and 1997 Downbeat Poll winner, Me’Shell N’degeocello, contemporary jazz pioneers Bob James and Pieces Of A Dream, Award winning Japanese jazz trumpeter, Terumasa Hino, and South African artist Jonathan Butler to name a few.

In 1999, he joined Trumpeteer Tim Hagans and super producer Bob Belden to write and record two CD’s both receiving grammy nominations. Dyson, also, performs as a solo artist with his band in between dates and tours with other artist as well. In early 1999, David also recorded his debut CD entitled “Soulmates” which received worldwide critical acclaim. In December 1999, Dyson formed an allegiance with the Marimelj Entertainment Group which led to the release of “Soulmates” nationally, through Warner Brothers (WEA) on December 5, 2000. He then released his second effort, “The Dawning” (2004), also garnering critical acclaim, on his own label Lohandfunk. His third CD “Unleashed!” was released in late 2008, and received critical acclaim, as well.

Throughout his career, David has earned quite a reputation as a bassist, songwriter, arranger, and producer. He continues to strive for excellence as one of today’s most promising artists.

————————————–
What follows along this uncertain path is a heartwarming saga of healing and hope. Honest, poignant and unflinchingly real, Lila chronicles one woman’s exploration of self-discovery and independence. It is about the choices we make and the choices that are made for us. It is about the dreams that remain throughout our lives. And it is about the love that endures, despite all odds, inside human hearts.

An Excerpt:

Chapter One

Between the pelting rain and her tears, Lila could barely see her way along the narrow winding road. The illuminated fuel light warned her that she had no choice but to pull off the interstate for gas. How she got turned around she did not know, but now she was lost. If only she didn’t have to stop for gas: but again, it was not her choice.

That was the story of Lila’s life: no choices. Other than this trip, she could not remember the last time she had actually made a life decision that was not based on the needs, wants or expectations of others. She had habitually let her parents or kids make the decisions, just to keep the peace and make them happy. Whatever was expected is what Lila did. Even marrying her beloved Ben represented more of what was expected of her than anything else. Whether her choice or not, she figured God always worked things out and she and Ben had a great life.

While struggling to concentrate on where she was, Lila’s mind drifted back to when she had first seen Ben. She was attending a meet and greet dance when she noticed the newest student at Lincoln High. With his hands in the pockets of his gray gabardine slacks and his black jacket open to show a matching shirt, he idled in the comer next to the bandstand where he was moving his feet and body to the rhythm of every song. Multicolored lights from a disco ball intermittently shined on his five-foot-ten frame, highlighting a ruddy complexion and reflecting off large framed eyeglasses.

Lila and a group of other students couldn’t hold back outbursts of laughter as they watched awkward versions of the latest dances being performed by a couple of teachers. Still laughing, Lila’s attention drifted from the dancers to the young man standing alone near the bandstand. She started to walk toward him. He didn’t look unhappy, just a bit out of place.

A sense of guilt came over Lila; she couldn’t believe that none of the other students had taken the time to engage the newcomer in conversation. What the heck is wrong with these people? How hard could it be for someone to just speak to him? Well it’s up to me, I guess. Lila ran her hands down the front and sides of her skirt and strode directly up to him.

“Hi, I’m Delilah – Lila Carpenter,” she said.

“Ben Anderson,” he replied, as he stretched out his hand to give Lila a strong handshake.

“What are you doing over here in the corner?”

“Just listening to the music. There’s not much else to do.”

“Didn’t anyone tell you that this is a dance? Come on,” Lila said, pulling Ben toward the dance floor.

“Oh, no, I can’t,” he protested.

“Sure, you can. Just follow me. You’ve been listening and moving to the music for the past thirty minutes, so you can do the same thing with me on the dance floor.”

Sporting a big grin, Ben followed Lila to the dance floor. They danced to the next four songs before he suggested they take a break.

Finding two seats near the side exit, Ben and Lila shared their short life stories. Ben and his family had moved to the neighborhood the past summer from Michigan. Stella and Peter Anderson were Ben’s adopted parents and the only family he had. His biological father was Peter’s brother. Ben’s mother had died giving him birth and his father asked Stella and Peter to take care of him. It was only six months later that his father became ill and died. Peter’s job transferred him to Maryland. Ben had a part-time job in his father’s office. Working and maintaining a 4.0 grade average was a real challenge and left him little time for socializing.

Lila had lived in the same town all her life. Born to Isabel and Charles Carpenter, who were both in their late thirties at the time, she was also an only child. Lila and her parents lived a very reserved life that revolved around their family and church. Her mother never wore make up or fancy clothes and no jewelry other than her wedding band. There were hardly any visitors to her home and her parents rarely went out.

While in junior high, Lila dressed just like her mother—in plain, neat clothing with no frills. Just under five feet, Lila often found herself standing off to the side waiting for the taller and more confident students to rush by before she walked to her next class. A part-time job after school at the mall opened her eyes to fashion and accessories. By the end of junior high she was jumping right into the crowd, dressing in all the latest fashions and accessorized to the hilt. None of this made her forget what her parents had instilled in her; treat everyone as you want to be treated. Often disappointed that everyone did not follow this golden rule, Lila absolutely refused to break it. Sometime before her senior year, Lila had more friends than she could count and was invited and tried to attend every social event. She had a knack for making everyone feel special and she loved to see other people happy.

Lila introduced Ben to other students, who accepted him immediately. He came off like a real gentleman, and that night was the beginning of a very special friendship; a special bond grew between Lila Carpenter and Ben Anderson.

Over the next two years Ben treated Lila like a queen, flattering her in every possible way. He drove her to and from school, took her to see all the latest shows and never missed an opportunity to give her a gift. Lila liked Ben a lot and enjoyed all the fun times they spent together. His constant attention made her feel very special. The Ben and Lila saga was a sweet one that brought smiles and speculation to almost everyone in town. Even the most envious teens couldn’t help but speak kindly of the duo and wish them well. No one doubted that the two would someday be married–no one, that is, except Lila. As much as she enjoyed sharing time with Ben, she did not love him and certainly wasn’t going to marry him. Ben was her very good friend and that was that. Ben, on the other hand, had no clue that the girl he spent every free minute with didn’t love him as he loved her.

Along with most of the boys from Ben’s high school class, he was drafted into the military. Three months after graduation, Ben was saying goodbye to his friends and family from a platform at Union Station. Lila pulled Ben close and kissed him gently on the lips. Surprised by the kiss, Ben smiled and pulled her closer for a second, longer kiss. Prompted by the crowd to go for a third, Ben stepped back and mouthed the words “thank you” to Lila. She smiled and gave him one last hug before he boarded the train. It was at that moment she realized that Ben wanted more. She had never looked beyond the safety of their friendship. An intimate relationship was out of the question for her–with Ben or anyone else. Any thoughts she might have in that direction had long since been destroyed by Ray-Ray.

I decide to give Stonewall a call to let him know that Charleta’s okay and with me until she decides to come home. He’ll be thrilled. I hate this.

“Hello?” the sleepy voice on the other end answers.

“Stonewall…it’s Faythe,” I say. “I’m just calling to let you know that your wife is here at home with me, and she’s pretty messed up. She’ll more than likely give you a call as soon as she gets up in the morning.”

“Probably, huh? Put my wife on this phone, Faye,” he says in a condescending tone.

“Your wife is…well she’s probably almost sound asleep already, just as I plan to be as soon as I hang up this phone on you,” I lie. I hate this.

“You just wake Charleta up and tell her that I’m on this phone, okay?” he demands. Before I can get my mouth open wide enough to go completely off on the brotha, Charleta stumbles into the kitchen and extends her hand for me to give her the phone.

“What do you want, Stonewall? Didn’t she just tell you that I was staying here tonight…and besides, didn’t you get my note?…I told you that I wasn’t coming home….Well that is just too bad now isn’t it?…No. There is nothing left to talk about…. You made it clear to me already just how you feel…What about the boys?…They have a father who is quite capable of taking care of them for a few days, don’t they?…If I can do it, then so can you, sweetheart….To hell with you, Stonewall, I’m not coming home tonight, and that’s final. I’ll call my boys in the morning. Good night, and do not call me here again.” She pushes the off button and slams my brand-new cordless down so hard that I am certain she has either broken it or she cracked her knuckles on that hard granite counter-top.

“Good night, Faye. I’ve got a headache. I’ll see you in the morning, okay?”

I bet you do, I think. “Okay,” I reply, watching Charleta storm out of the kitchen and back to the guest room. Man. This institution of marriage thing is powerful stuff. Charleta must have felt Stonewall on the phone, because I know good and well I was whispering. “Unreal,” I say to myself, and shake my head.

I’m too wired to sleep, so I take a nice warm shower hoping to give myself time to wind down and relax. Afterward I feel much better. It’s 12:36 a.m. when I climb into my big warm bed that’s been waiting for me. I must have gone right into a sound sleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, because when I reach over to pick up the phone I look over at the clock and it’s 6:00 a.m. already. It feels like I’ve only been asleep for fifteen minutes or so.

“Hello,” I answer softly.

“Ms. Alexander?”

“Yes, this is she.”

“Hello, I’m calling from American Express about your bill. It’s overdue, ma’am, and, we’d like to know when you plan to send us the balance due on your account.”

“What? Not at six o’clock on Sunday morning, you don’t,” I say sharply. “Wait a minute, there is no balance on my AmEx account, and if there is, you’d call my employer about that…they handle the account. You know what? Put your manager on the phone.” I cannot believe this, I think, raising myself from under the blankets that are weighing me down. I need to sit up to go ballistic. Suddenly, I hear laughter on the other end of the phone.

“That’s my angel,” the man’s voice says. This cannot be…oh, my God, I think.

“Hello?” he says, still laughing.

“Who is this?” I respond. It sounds like David, but I can’t be sure.

There are free and at-cost book promotional services available to authors, especially on the Internet. If you do not have the time and energy necessary to devote to doing all of your own book marketing and promotion, you should seriously consider outsourcing, as an alternative, or as a supplement to your efforts.

Today, I am attending the SPOC, which is an all-day Self-Publishers Online Conference,(Connecting Entrepreneurial Authors with Self-Publishing Resources), presented by James Byrd and Susan Daffron, author of Publishize, owner of Logical Expressions, Inc. If you have an opportunity to visit Self-Publishers Online Conference, or to purchase conference audios, you should. Can’t make it to the May 12 – 14 conference this week? Get the SPOC 2009 audios that are available online now. There is a wealth of information available for authors and publishers. The great thing is, you can purchase entry into the conference at various levels, or you can listen to the conference for free when you register.

One of the morning speakers was Dan Poynter of Para Publishing, who needs no introductions, especially in the world of self-publishing. He wrote “The Self-Publishing Manual.” Before the next seminar begins (in 15-minutes), I wanted to at least share some of the wealth with you. Dan Poynter emphasized 4 ways you can promote your book. In the newly-evolving publishing industry, he suggested—online book promotion , as the only way to go. The 4 ways Dan recommended authors promote online are below:

Promote Your Book Online With:

Blogs – Connect with readers on your own blog or by contributing or commenting on other blogs (especially those that relate to the subject of your book).

Forums – Participate in online forums where the subject of your book is being discussed. Remember to make a useful contribution, not a blatant advertisement for your book. That would be rude. The right way to promote your book in a forum is by way of your signature. See signature example:

Donna L. Patton, author

“From Faythe to Ever-Increasing Faith”

http://www.abrah-covepublishing.com

Websites – Every author needs a website on which to promote and sell their own book(s).

Social Media – Connect with readers on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, MySpace, and even Blog Talk Radio is also a great way for authors to connect to readers. If you can land an interview with a radio talk show host.

Maybe you have not been successful in your efforts to get featured on a blog site or land a radio interview spot. We may have the perfect solution for you. Our team has been in the business of successfully promoting books and authors since 2003. We have our own Blog Talk Radio show, called “Out the Box,” which is dedicated to promoting self-published books and authors. What are you waiting for? Contact us today. We can help you get the word out.

The opportunity for you to fill-up 15 minutes with the very best information you can share with readers about your book will be all yours with 15-Minute Shorts. There is no pressure and you won’t run out of things to say, because each interview will be:

A one-on-one conversation with me (Donna Patton)

Conducted over the phone

Pre-recorded

Only 15-minutes short

People Assume Authors are Speakers

Oftentimes, new authors are apprehensive about speaking in front of live audiences. Some authors shy away from being interviewed altogether. I know I’ve done it. Usually, people just assume that because you are an author you should feel comfortable with public speaking. But, you and I know that is not necessarily true in all cases.

No Luxury of Fear

The truth of the matter is that feeling uncomfortable about speaking in front of large, medium or even small groups of people could be the very thing to stop you from getting out there and promoting your book. I suppose it is okay to feel nervous. It’s not the end of the world. It happens. But, what is not okay is that you allow your nerves to stop you from doing what would be necessary to promote your book.

Remember when I said some people assume authors are comfortable with public speaking? When I published my first novel, “From Faythe to Ever-Increasing Faith,” in 2003, my then pastors gave me an opportunity to give a presentation to the Sunday morning congregation of about 1,200 members—during 1st and 2nd services—on very short notice. At first I’d panicked, but then, I just decided to suck it up and do what I was asked to, what I needed to do. That was the very 1st time I had discussed my book publicly. It wasn’t the best presentation I’d given, but I am my biggest critic.

It had not been that I feared speaking in front of the 2 large congregations. I’d spoken in front of large groups before then. What I feared would come after the presentation. The fact was that I did not feel comfortable allowing an audience of ‘church-goers’ to examine my thoughts and imaginations, which were written on the pages of my inspirational fiction/romance novel. I know that’s crazy, right? Maybe it is, but maybe not. That story is for another blog altogether.

Promote Your Book with an Interview

After I’d really thought about it, I realized what I might have missed had I allowed my ‘nerves’ to override my better judgment. What I decided was, to get over myself and get out there and talk about “From Faythe to Ever-Increasing Faith” with book clubs, reading groups and organizations; in-person and via teleconferences; during intimate sessions and as keynote speaker for various events. Each experience was more fulfilling, educational and more exciting than the next. As a speaker, I was rewarded with honorariums and sold copies of my book after each event I participated in.

Any effort to promote your book can result in book sales. Why not start promoting your book today? If you would like to have a one-on-one conversation in a relaxed environment that you create for yourself, consider 15-Minute Shorts. Take the 1st step. Contact us today.

Disclaimer: A-C reserves the right to respectfully refuse to interview authors of books that we believe might be inappropriate for our subscribers and site visitors. Please do not submit requests for interviews if your book contains language that is sexually explicit, lewd, disrespectful or offensive to any religion, creed, race or gender. We are a family-friendly blog site.

A Few Basics on Self-Publishing
Obtain an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). If a publisher or printer assigns an ISBN to your book, then they would be the publisher of record for your book. You can purchase ISBNs directly from R.R. Bowker or via a Bowker approved agency in blocks of 10, 100 or singularly. ISBNs are assigned to publishers and associated with their “imprint.” If you plan to have someone purchase ISBNs on your behalf, have them purchase under yours or your company’s name.

Your self-published book will represent you. Have your manuscript professionally edited, copy edited and proofed.

Have your book cover designed by a graphic designer—preferably one who specializes in book covers. Your book represents your brand.

You will need a Bookland EAN barcode, which will include a price code. Your printer or book cover designer can purchase it for you or generate it from a software program. The barcode should be printed on the outside, bottom of the back cover.

You will need to select a print company. And, you may be considering an order fulfillment company and distributor, as well. Don’t invest large amounts of money to contract these services without doing your research first. For the fastest and most economical Print on Demand (POD) service available today, we suggest you review the Lightning Source (lightningsource.com) book model. Lightning Source is used by traditional, as well as, self-published authors and vanity presses.

Tips for Marketing Your Self-Published Book
Self-published authors confront the same book marketing challenges, as do commercially published authors, after the publishing process is completed. The question becomes how to get your self-published book out into the marketplace and into the hands of your target audience. We will provide several marketing tips that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Send a press release. A well written press release is a good way to announce that your book is published and ready to purchase. You can start by targeting your own local newspaper. Send a press release on a consistent basis, until they contact you for an interview. You can also send out a press release to your family, friends, co-workers and to online directories. This will save you a tremendous amount of time, expose your book to new markets and potentially lead to sales.

Authors should also be bloggers. Blogging is a form of social media, and a powerful tool to have on your side. In it, you can be generous with the information you provide to benefit your readers. And, since the purpose of your blog would be to promote your book, the information you provide should relate to your book. In being generous, you will very likely gain a loyal fan base.

Join social networks. Social networking is very popular today. At the very least you should join Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
Twitter allows you to create micro-blog posts of 140 characters and drip information about your book to your followers.

Facebook lets you develop a profile and build a list of friends to interact with on a daily basis. This can also lead to valuable contacts both in potential customers, as well as marketing your book online.

Linkedin is another social networking site where professionals interact. This is one you should consider joining and building up contacts as well.

Search Engine Optimization
Learn basic search engine optimization and target specific keywords that relate to the theme of your book. This can drive traffic to your website or blog, where you can provide a link to your book content and ordering information.

There are other things you can do that are also focused around social media to promote your book. These would include:

Relevant discussion forums

You-Tube videos

Article marketing

The more readers who know your book is available for purchase the more potential sales will lead to you.

Free Book Marketing
Other examples for attracting attention when promoting your book include:

Book club discussions

Speaking engagements

Author interviews

Set up virtual blog tours. Virtual blog tours are becoming more popular than
