Make no mistake about it. Whether it is commercially published or self-published, your book’s success will depend on how many copies you sell. Ultimately, how many copies you sell will depend a great deal on your ability to promote your book. The fact is; you will need to devote a significant portion of your own time getting the word out.
There are free and at-cost book promotional services available to authors, especially on the Internet. If you do not have the time and energy necessary to devote to doing all of your own book marketing and promotion, you should seriously consider outsourcing, as an alternative, or as a supplement to your efforts.
Today, I am attending the SPOC, which is an all-day Self-Publishers Online Conference,(Connecting Entrepreneurial Authors with Self-Publishing Resources), presented by James Byrd and Susan Daffron, author of Publishize, owner of Logical Expressions, Inc. If you have an opportunity to visit Self-Publishers Online Conference, or to purchase conference audios, you should. Can’t make it to the May 12 – 14 conference this week? Get the SPOC 2009 audios that are available online now. There is a wealth of information available for authors and publishers. The great thing is, you can purchase entry into the conference at various levels, or you can listen to the conference for free when you register.
One of the morning speakers was Dan Poynter of Para Publishing, who needs no introductions, especially in the world of self-publishing. He wrote “The Self-Publishing Manual.” Before the next seminar begins (in 15-minutes), I wanted to at least share some of the wealth with you. Dan Poynter emphasized 4 ways you can promote your book. In the newly-evolving publishing industry, he suggested—online book promotion , as the only way to go. The 4 ways Dan recommended authors promote online are below:
Promote Your Book Online With:
Blogs – Connect with readers on your own blog or by contributing or commenting on other blogs (especially those that relate to the subject of your book).
Forums – Participate in online forums where the subject of your book is being discussed. Remember to make a useful contribution, not a blatant advertisement for your book. That would be rude. The right way to promote your book in a forum is by way of your signature. See signature example:

Websites – Every author needs a website on which to promote and sell their own book(s).
Social Media – Connect with readers on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, MySpace, and even Blog Talk Radio is also a great way for authors to connect to readers. If you can land an interview with a radio talk show host.
Maybe you have not been successful in your efforts to get featured on a blog site or land a radio interview spot. We may have the perfect solution for you. Our team has been in the business of successfully promoting books and authors since 2003. We have our own Blog Talk Radio show, called “Out the Box,” which is dedicated to promoting self-published books and authors. What are you waiting for? Contact us today. We can help you get the word out.
Happy Promoting!

Hi James,
SPOC was excellent! Thank you so much for the amount of preparation and work you, Susan and others put into pulling together experts from the book publishing/marketing industry. The information provided was invaluable. I apologize for not mentioning your name in the post. Will fix.
