People Assume Authors are Speakers
Oftentimes, new authors are apprehensive about speaking in front of live audiences. Some authors shy away from being interviewed altogether. I know I’ve done it. Usually, people just assume that because you are an author you should feel comfortable with public speaking. But, you and I know that is not necessarily true in all cases.
No Luxury of Fear
The truth of the matter is that feeling uncomfortable about speaking in front of large, medium or even small groups of people could be the very thing to stop you from getting out there and promoting your book. I suppose it is okay to feel nervous. It’s not the end of the world. It happens. But, what is not okay is that you allow your nerves to stop you from doing what would be necessary to promote your book.
Remember when I said some people assume authors are comfortable with public speaking? When I published my first novel, “From Faythe to Ever-Increasing Faith,” in 2003, my then pastors gave me an opportunity to give a presentation to the Sunday morning congregation of about 1,200 members—during 1st and 2nd services—on very short notice. At first I’d panicked, but then, I just decided to suck it up and do what I was asked to, what I needed to do. That was the very 1st time I had discussed my book publicly. It wasn’t the best presentation I’d given, but I am my biggest critic.
It had not been that I feared speaking in front of the 2 large congregations. I’d spoken in front of large groups before then. What I feared would come after the presentation. The fact was that I did not feel comfortable allowing an audience of ‘church-goers’ to examine my thoughts and imaginations, which were written on the pages of my inspirational fiction/romance novel. I know that’s crazy, right? Maybe it is, but maybe not. That story is for another blog altogether.
Promote Your Book with an Interview
After I’d really thought about it, I realized what I might have missed had I allowed my ‘nerves’ to override my better judgment. What I decided was, to get over myself and get out there and talk about “From Faythe to Ever-Increasing Faith” with book clubs, reading groups and organizations; in-person and via teleconferences; during intimate sessions and as keynote speaker for various events. Each experience was more fulfilling, educational and more exciting than the next. As a speaker, I was rewarded with honorariums and sold copies of my book after each event I participated in.
